Alice's Birthday Cake is a story about a girl growing up during World War II. Although her thirteenth birthday is tomorrow, she is very sad. Her father is away fighting in the war, so he won't be there to sing Happy Birthday to her. With food and materials on short supply, she knows that her family cannot make her a cake.
